How does it work?
The UV-C light emits photons that can penetrate cells of micro-organisms like the coronavirus. It then breaks down the RNA and DNA to damage the nucleic acid within. With the genetic material destroyed, the virus is prevented from reproducing further. Non-toxic beams of light are radiated from an installed device that disinfects the air and surfaces. With the tendency for light to be reflective, the rays can penetrate hard-to-reach areas.
Does UV-C light kill COVID?
National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories (NEIDL) exposed materials containing the virus to a UV-C tube lamp. It found that a dose of 5 mJ/cm2 resulted in “a reduction of the SARS-CoV-2 virus of 99% in 6 seconds.” (SARS-CoV-2 is the more scientific name for the novel coronavirus). UV-C photons penetrate cells and damage nucleic acid by breaking down the DNA of microorganisms, and RNA of viruses including Coronavirus. UV-C radiation disinfects the air and surfaces in the room (walls, worktops, objects, etc.) and is able to reach various nooks, in the form of reflected rays.
Is it safe to turn on when people are in the room?
When using the Purelight Flow, yes, it is safe to have turned on at all times including when people are in the room. When using the Purelight Hybrid that also cleans surfaces, the UVC light should only be activated when people are not in the room and this can be automated with sensors and smart plug and button technology.

UV-C luminaires are one of the most effective methods of air and surface disinfection. Research from Boston University’s National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories (NEIDL) has confirmed that UV-C light sources are effective methods in the inactivation of SARS-CoV-2, the virus causing COVID-19.
Their tests showed that the UV-C light reduced 99% of the SARS-CoV-2 in 6 seconds when applying a 5mJ/cm2 dose. The Purelight Flow comes in two versions; the Standard Flow and Hybrid.
The Standard Flow has the UV-C tubes contained in an internal chamber, through which the device pushes the airflow to sanitise the air. It provides continuous air disinfection on low power consumption, making them highly efficient. This device can be in use at all times in offices, schools, and hospitals with high volumes of foot traffic.
The Purelight Hybrid uses a direct light source, sanitising both the surfaces and air. However, it can only be switched on when there are no people present. For contained spaces such as lifts and public transport, which have periods of vacancy, the Hybrid device is highly effective.
You may consider combining the Hybrid with a Smart Plug to set a timer for activation when people are not in the building. The Purelight range is manageable through a mobile application, using a wireless door opening detector to switch off the Hybrid Purelight Flow and ensure the longest possible operating time.
The Purelight Hybrid is a dual-function UV-C lamp is a solution designed to sterilize rooms and surfaces. The specialist bacterio- and virucidal luminaire with the T8 light source has been designed for surface-mounting or stand-mounting in a mobile version. It emits UV-C radiation at 253.7 nm. Luminaire in FLOW mode thanks to the safe shielding of emitted UV-C light ensures that the luminaire can be used in the presence of people indoors. Additionally equipped with an external radiator enabling additional DIRECT function, i.e. decontamination of the surface after leaving the sterilized room by humans and animals.
